On This Day In History - Mark McCormack Is Born

On this day in 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, a man who would come to be known as 'The Most Powerful Man in Sport', was born. Mark McCormack, who formed the International Management Group (IMG), is better known for signing golfers than swinging clubs - having become the most influential sports agent of all-time.

A useful golfer from Yale who missed the cut in the 1968 US Open, McCormack signed his first client - the photogenic Arnold Palmer - in 1960, when he realised that Palmer's good looks and popular appeal could be turned into big money off the golf course as well as on it.

In the '60s, the IMG stable included the Big Three of Palmer, Nicklaus and Player, and McCormack has represented nearly all of golf's biggest names, of course, including today's biggest, Tiger Woods.

Golf remains IMG's core concern however, and while Nick Faldo and Greg Norman may have left McCormack - who died in 2003 - his company currently looks after Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, Annika Sorenstam - the big one, Woods - and of course, still Nicklaus and Palmer.
